What is a Peace Pole?
A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in different languages on each of its four sides. The languages on the Decatur poles include English, as well as three other languages of the host location’s choice. Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken, and uplift the human consciousness in our community. They remind us to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony. There are an estimated 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world.
Why Peace Poles?
As a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of the Rotary mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect. By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
What is Rotary?
The Rotary Club of Decatur is part of a global network of 45,000 clubs made up of more than 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
