Barn Colony Show Opens Its 80th Anniversary Show on First Friday

April 16, 2019

The Decatur Area Arts Council will host the annual exhibit of artwork by Barn Colony Artists from May 3-30 in the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Madden Arts Center in downtown Decatur. Each year in May, Decatur’s oldest artist group showcases the varied styles and creativity of their novice through experienced members. From oil paintings to watercolors, colored pencil works to photography, the Barn Colony Artists’ Annual Show features a wide range of media. The public is invited to stop by the Madden Arts Center between May 3–17 to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award!

A talented group of local artists, Barn Colony is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The organization’s name originated from their meeting place at the James Millikin Homestead carriage house where they met for their first 30 years. They now meet each Monday evening September through May at the Madden Arts Center at 125 N. Water St. in downtown Decatur. Aspiring (and inspired) artists are encouraged to join Barn Colony for an opportunity to work among fellow artists, learn and exhibit in the community.

The First Friday Gallery Walk on Friday, May 3 from 5-7:30 pm features three exhibits at the Madden Arts Center:

  • Opening reception for the Barn Colony Artists exhibit
  • Paintings by Stephen Gardner, presented by Blue Connection
  • Decatur Public Schools Annual Middle/HS Art Show displayed on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center

In addition, Illinois Art Gallery will also be featuring watercolor paintings by local artist, Sue Watts and The ArtFarm will be displaying work by Shari Mullinax.

Artist talks will take place at 6 pm at the Madden Arts Center and 6:30 pm at Illinois Art Gallery. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit and the Gallery Walk are open free to the public. For more exhibit information, contact the Decatur Area Arts Council at 423-3189.
