The focus of the beginning classes will be on good lead and follow connections.
The Decatur Area Arts Council is excited to offer ballroom dance classes, led by world-class dance instructor Christina Conway. The initial classes this summer will be two sessions of beginner ballroom dance, with intermediate highlights, for those who are brand new to ballroom dancing or looking to touch up rusty dance skills.
The fee for each four-week session is $32 per person, meeting on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. with one hour of instruction followed by practice time. Participants must be 16 years of age or older.
The focus of the beginning classes will be on good lead and follow connections. Dances covered will include Standard Foxtrot, American Smooth Waltz, Night Club Two Step, and Jitterbug/Single-Time Swing, if time allows.
Conway emphasizes “The only thing students need for these classes to start are comfy socks. No one needs to go to the expense of dance shoes, unless they plan to get serious right away.”
With more than 30 years of competitive ballroom dance experience on the World Dance Sport circuit, Christina Conway was most recently the ballroom dancing teacher at a private music and arts academy in the Pacific Northwest before relocating to Decatur. She has experience teaching all levels of ballroom dance from youth and junior classes and summer dance camps all the way up to teaching the pros you see on YouTube.
Conway is very enthusiastic and explains, “My broad intention is to make social ballroom dance accessible in Decatur and to grow, enhance, and lift the caliber of social and ballroom dancing in Central Illinois.”
