2017 International Arts Experience - CHINA: Symbols & Motifs (A Chinese Art Journey)

May 19th, 2017

The Decatur Area Arts Council is presenting an exhibit entitled CHINA: SYMBOLS & MOTIFS (A Chinese Art Journey) from June 2-July 27 in the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Madden Arts Center, 125 N. Water Street in downtown Decatur.  The exhibit includes a wide array of art forms including paintings, wood carvings, scrolls, porcelain and ceramics, tea ware, jade, furniture, textiles, and artifacts.  Both traditional and contemporary pieces incorporate symbols and motifs that tell a story about the culture and how the Chinese value longevity, peace, prosperity and so much more. Through the art work visitors will get a sense of the ancient and rich history of China.

The exhibit and event are in collaboration with the US-China Cultural Arts Exchange Association in Rantoul, IL.  Many items on display come from the collection of Dr. Ian Wang, President of the UCCAEA.  Additional items are on loan from private collectors in Decatur as well as the Birks Museum at Millikin University and the Giertz Education Center at Krannert Center in Champaign.

An opening cultural event on Friday evening, June 2 from 5:00-7:30 pm celebrates the Chinese culture – a “don’t miss” opportunity for the entire family!  There will be authentic Chinese guest performances and audience participation throughout the evening, including:
